Music shouldn’t segregate. However, the creators of Black is Punk were inspired to create the exhibition due to the negative experiences they’ve had as Black girls enjoying good ole’ Rock'n'roll. As a political art assignment, the founder of the exhibition, Nikaiya Lawson carved the iconic slogan and character for traditional woodblock printmaking. The prints were created not so much to recognize black people in punk, but to say that punk already exists in black culture!
Black is Punk flips stigmas of Black folks on their head by displaying diversity in the Black community through a variety of creative works. The Fall exhibit, which opens on August 25th, will show the true ‘Punk-ness" of Blackness. The creators of the exhibition believe there is nothing more counterculture than being Black in America.
